Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Suspension Gains International Attention

Ackson made this statement in response to an appeal by Akpoti-Uduaghan during an IPU session on Women in Parliament. The senator sought intervention from the IPU and the United Nations, insisting that her suspension was politically motivated and unfair.

Addressing the gathering with emotion, Akpoti-Uduaghan stated, “I come with a heavy heart from Nigeria. But first, I’d like to apologise to honourable members—I am not here to bring shame to my country. I am here to seek help for the women of Nigeria.”

She explained that her suspension came after she submitted a petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which allegedly contained accusations of sexual harassment. Instead of a fair investigation, she claimed she was punished with a six-month suspension from legislative duties.

“I thought submitting the petition would result in a fair and transparent investigation, but instead, I was silenced and suspended,” she lamented.

Akpoti-Uduaghan detailed the severe repercussions of her suspension, including the withdrawal of her security details, confiscation of her official vehicles, and suspension of her salary. Additionally, she has been prohibited from accessing the National Assembly and presenting herself as a senator, both domestically and internationally, for the duration of the suspension.

She described her situation as an example of systemic suppression of women in Nigerian politics, stating:

“This is a blatant example of political persecution and a deliberate attempt to exclude women from leadership roles in Nigeria. If a female senator can be treated this way openly, it’s unimaginable how ordinary Nigerian women are treated daily in workplaces and universities.”

In response, IPU President Tulia Ackson acknowledged the seriousness of the matter and assured that the organization would examine the case thoroughly. However, she stressed the importance of hearing all perspectives before making a decision.

“We have acknowledged her concerns, and as an organization, we will take the appropriate actions. However, it is crucial that we hear the opposing side before making any decisions, as is the standard practice at the IPU,” Ackson stated.

She also noted that a Nigerian delegate was prepared to speak on the matter but could not do so due to time limitations, underscoring the ongoing nature of the discussions.

With the IPU now reviewing the case, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension is likely to face further scrutiny on the international stage. This could influence how the Nigerian Senate handles the matter in the future, potentially shaping the broader conversation on women’s participation in politics in Nigeria.
