Speed Darlington Sues IGP Egbetokun, Seeks N300 Million in Damages

The suit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, claims the singer’s fundamental rights were violated after his arrest and prolonged detention over allegations of defamation and cyberstalking of award-winning artist Burna Boy.

Justice Musa Liman, presiding over the case, initially ordered Speed Darlington’s release or arraignment within 48 hours on December 23, 2024. However, the police argued logistical challenges due to the Christmas holiday prevented compliance.

The court has scheduled January 13, 2025, for a hearing on the substantive matter, while the criminal charges filed against Speed Darlington are set for arraignment on January 15.

In his suit, Speed Darlington seeks a declaration that his arrest and detention violated his constitutional rights. He also demands his immediate release or production in court and compensation for damages caused by his alleged unlawful detention.

The singer’s legal team has also highlighted instances of alleged torture and maltreatment during his detention and questioned the validity of claims that he violated administrative bail conditions.
