Wizkid edges out Drake, Burna Boy to win 2 titles at MOBO Awards

Nigerian superstar Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid won two awards at 2021 MOBO awards Sunday night.

In the event held at Coventry Building Society Arena, Coventry, Wizkid won ‘Best Africa Act’ and ‘Best International act’.

The ceremony, streamed on YouTube live, was hosted by multi-platinum-selling artist and actress Leigh-Anne Pinnock and comedian and broadcaster Munya Chawawa.

The two new awards increased Wizkid’s trophies at the MOBO to five.

To win Best African act, Wizkid beat a field of stars, including Burna Boy, Davido, CKay, Tiwa Savage, Rema, Tems, NSG, King Promise, and Ayra Starr,

The Nigerian star also beat Kanye West, Drake, Megan Thee Stallion, Lil Nas X, Doja Cat, Polo G, Rema, Skillibeng, and Young Stoner Life (Young Thug & Gunna) to win the Best International act.

The MOBO Awards (Music of Black Origin, also known as the MOBOs) are an annual British music award presentation honouring achievements in “music of black origin”, including hip hop, grime, R&B, soul, reggae, jazz, gospel, and African music.

Singer Tiwa Savage was among music stars who showed up at the award ceremony.

But many of the winners were absent – including Wizkid and Dave, who won the best album of the year.

Highlights of the ceremony will be screened on BBC One on Wednesday, 8 December at 22:35 GMT, along with previously unseen backstage footage.
