Activist Arrested and Charged for Alleged Curse on Seyi Tinubu, Egbetokun Remanded by Court

Thomas, who works as a nurse, was charged with three counts of cyberbullying under the Cybercrimes Act of 2024, which prohibits using the internet to threaten or harass individuals. She pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The allegations include threatening statements made in a video:

• Predicting Seyi Tinubu’s death within the year
• Making threats against Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun
• Declaring that the children of police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi would die in front of him

Her lawyer’s verbal request for bail was denied by Judge Emeka Nwite, who instructed the defense to submit a formal written application instead.

Thomas’s legal troubles began after her arrest on December 13 in Lagos, following the circulation of the controversial video. This incident occurred months after her initial arrest on October 20, 2024, during a protest marking four years since the #EndSARS demonstrations at the Lekki tollgate.

After her recent arrest in Lagos, Thomas was transferred to Abuja, where her trial is set to commence on December 30. The case highlights the government’s application of the Cybercrimes Act in addressing online threats and harassment.
