The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) is actively preparing to introduce an e-ticketing and central booking system for motorists in the Federal Capital Territory. Mr. Abdulateef Bello, the DRTS Director, shared this information in a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.Bello emphasized that this technological initiative aims to greatly reduce and eventually eliminate in-person interactions between DRTS officials and drivers on the roads....CONTINUE READING>>>

To facilitate this, the service has collaborated with various providers who specialize in electronic traffic management and penalty systems. Some of these companies have begun pilot projects by installing their devices at key locations in the FCT to demonstrate their capability to identify traffic violations and enforce penalties.

Following these demonstrations, the DRTS will seek regulatory approval and submit their findings to the Abuja Investment Company for review, after which they will approach the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission before proceeding with formal procurement. Bello anticipates that some of these systems could be operational by the first quarter of next year. The director noted that electronic enforcement will help address vehicle-related offenses and improve safety on the roads in the FCT.

He mentioned that the potential for conflicts between vehicle inspection officers and the public will diminish, as the DRTS is making significant progress in this area. When a driver commits an infraction, they will receive a ticket via their phone—assuming the vehicle is registered in the FCT—allowing them to continue driving while being informed of the violation, fine, and payment instructions.Bello also mentioned that the DRTS has challenged a court ruling that limits their ability to impound vehicles that violate regulations.

Currently, personnel are being trained on the e-ticketing system, while others are focused on traffic coordination. Officers are utilizing the Abuja Inspector App to check motorists’ compliance with regulations.Under the leadership of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Bello assured that the service would close any gaps in vehicle regulation enforcement in the territory.

He urged drivers to follow traffic laws, keep their vehicle registrations current, and timely renew their driver’s licenses to stay compliant. The DRTS is committed to modernizing its operations to offer efficient services that reflect the FCT’s status and is also moving towards a paperless vehicle administration system, which will be part of the upcoming budget.
