FCTA Showcases Arrested Vandals of Abuja Street Lights

During a parade showcasing some of the suspects, he noted that five were apprehended on Thursday, while two managed to escape. Obuah highlighted the crucial role of public vigilance and media collaboration, asserting, “Security is a collective responsibility.”
He mentioned the involvement of local vigilantes and hunters, which contributed to the recent arrests. He warned that anyone participating in the vandalism of government property, including both the vandals and those who buy stolen items, would face legal consequences.
The AMMC’s heightened efforts come in response to growing concerns about damage to newly installed solar-powered street lights, aimed at enhancing public safety and nighttime visibility. Aderemi Rashid, the contractor responsible for the solar installations, reported that some equipment had been stolen despite security measures.
He indicated that the sophistication of the theft suggested the involvement of well-equipped individuals rather than common criminals. It’s important to note that the AMMC recently disclosed the arrest of an expatriate contractor who was handed over to the police for dismantling streetlight components in Abuja.
Obuah accused this contractor of intentionally damaging infrastructure to secure future repair contracts. The AMMC has pledged to persist in these operations and encourages residents to report any suspicious activity related to the vandalism of public property.
