Federal Fire Service Calls for Stricter Safety Measures After Niger State Tanker Explosion

The explosion occurred along the Dikko-Maje Road, opposite Badeggi filling station in Suleja Local Government Area, after a tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) crashed. An attempt to transfer its contents using a generator triggered a deadly explosion, consuming over 50 people, many of whom had gathered to scoop fuel, according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).

Speaking to journalists, Jaji emphasized the need for stricter safety protocols and warned against reckless driving by tanker operators, particularly on hazardous routes. He expressed concern over the growing frequency of tanker explosions and fire incidents at fuel stations, stating that even small sparks or gas leaks could lead to catastrophic consequences.

He strongly discouraged the dangerous practice of scooping fuel from fallen tankers, saying:
“Fuel vapors and leaks can ignite at any moment. Your life is worth more than a few liters of fuel.”

Jaji urged the public to avoid accident sites involving fuel tankers and contact the Federal Fire Service for immediate intervention. He also called on fuel station owners, gas plant operators, and gas cylinder users to strictly adhere to safety protocols to prevent further disasters.

Expressing condolences to the families affected by the Niger State explosion, Jaji praised first responders for their dedication and highlighted the need for enhanced public awareness and prioritization of safety to prevent similar tragedies.

He further advocated for the modernization of the Fire Service Act of 1963, which he described as outdated and inadequate for addressing current fire safety challenges. He called for its swift review and passage by the National Assembly to strengthen fire safety measures and reduce future incidents.

“Every life is precious, and we must do everything in our power to protect our citizens,” Jaji said, reaffirming the Federal Fire Service’s commitment to improving safety standards across the country.
