KWASU: JAMB’s Ban on Law Admissions Won’t Affect Current Students

In a statement issued in Ilorin on Thursday, the Acting Director of University Relations, Dr. Saeedat Aliyu, explained that the suspension stemmed from a decision by the Council for Legal Education (CLE) to penalize the university for initially launching its Law programme in 2018 with only the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) approval, without securing CLE’s consent at the time.

Dr. Aliyu emphasized that KWASU now has full accreditation from both the NUC and CLE to run two undergraduate law programmes: Common Law and Common and Islamic Law.

She reassured students and stakeholders, stating:

“Management wishes to state that the 1-year ban does not in any way affect students currently running their programs in the University’s Faculty of Law.”

She further affirmed KWASU’s commitment to regulatory compliance and confirmed that the university will adhere to CLE’s directive by not admitting new students into its Law programmes for the 2025/2026 academic session.

“KWASU holds all regulatory institutions in very high regard and will comply with the sanctions imposed by CLE by not offering admission into the 2 law programs in the coming 2025/2026 admission session,” she added.

Dr. Aliyu also encouraged prospective students to consider other accredited programmes at KWASU, assuring them of the institution’s continued academic excellence.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) had earlier announced that it would not approve admissions for Law programmes in KWASU and seven other universities due to CLE’s suspension of their Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programmes for the 2025/2026 academic session.
