LASTMA Cracks Down on Traffic Violators, Seizes 173 Vehicles

According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, the enforcement operation targeted notorious gridlock hotspots, including Idumota, Ijaye Street, Martins, Ereko, Nnamdi Azikiwe by Tom Jones, Ebute-Ero, Oyingbo, Ijora, Adeniji Adele, and Iddo.

“This rigorous enforcement underscores LASTMA’s unwavering commitment to eradicating chronic traffic congestion and mitigating reckless road practices,” Taofiq stated. “Many offenders were caught engaging in dangerous maneuvers, such as driving against traffic (one-way) and making hazardous reversals from Iddo to Idumota to pick up passengers—reckless actions that have caused multiple accidents and needless loss of lives.”

The operation was led by LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki under the directive of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa. It specifically targeted unauthorized garages, which have been major contributors to persistent traffic congestion, causing hardship for commuters and residents.

Sustained Efforts to Restore Order

Bakare-Oki reaffirmed that the crackdown is part of the Lagos State Government’s long-term plan to improve traffic flow and restore order on the roads.

“The state government remains resolute in enforcing traffic regulations and eliminating illegal parking that hinders mobility,” he stated. “These stringent measures serve as a clear warning that flagrant disregard for traffic laws will no longer be tolerated.”

The LASTMA boss further emphasized that critical locations such as Iddo to Idumota, Oyingbo, Ebute-Ero, and the Adeniji Adele roundabout have long suffered from illegal parking and makeshift garages, which must be decisively addressed.

“The reckless operations of commercial bus drivers not only obstruct vehicular movement but also pose serious risks to pedestrian safety. LASTMA’s intervention is crucial in dismantling these bottlenecks and ensuring smooth traffic circulation in Lagos,” he concluded.

This latest enforcement action signals LASTMA’s commitment to making Lagos roads safer, more organized, and efficient for all road users.
