Mass Resignations Rock Nigerian Community in UK Amid Corruption Allegations

The community, which boasts over 75,000 Nigerians across the UK, started as a social media group but has since expanded to include offline events and gatherings aimed at fostering unity among Nigerians in the diaspora. However, recent concerns over financial accountability have led to unrest within the group, prompting several key figures to step down from leadership positions.

Kuti, the founder of the community, publicly acknowledged the issues surrounding his leadership and accepted responsibility for the dissatisfaction among members.

“I take full responsibility for the turn of events over the years and the current unsettling state of the community,” he stated. “I will be stepping down as a moderator, and all posts made with the official handle will now require approval from the NEB.”

He admitted to shortcomings in financial transparency and assured members that his resignation was a step towards restoring trust.

“I regret my lack of absolute accountability and transparency to the community, and to this end, I have carefully thought through the following decisions in the interest of furthering our community’s goals,” he wrote.

Despite stepping down as president, Kuti revealed that he would retain a role as a Person with Significant Control (PSC) in the company overseeing the community’s operations.

Shortly after his announcement, other key members of the leadership also resigned, including Ayinde, who served as a volunteer consultant. In his resignation statement, Ayinde clarified that all financial obligations had been fulfilled before his departure.

“The executives and directors are responsible for preparing the financial statements that give a true and fair view of the state of affairs and activities of the company/community,” he stated.

He further explained that he had completed all necessary financial reports and tax filings for the community, covering the periods from 22/11/2022 to 30/11/2023 and 1/12/2023 to 31/12/2024. With his job done, he officially resigned with immediate effect.

The mass resignations have sparked mixed reactions among members of the Nigerian community on X. While some have criticized the outgoing leadership for poor governance, others see this as an opportunity to restructure and introduce better accountability measures.

As the community prepares to elect new leaders, the focus now shifts to addressing the concerns that led to these resignations and rebuilding trust among members.
