MURIC Accuses Nursing School Authorities of Discriminating Against Muslim Students Over Hijab

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has raised concerns over alleged discrimination against Muslim nursing students in Nigerian medical colleges, particularly at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan. MURIC highlighted instances where female Muslim students were reportedly compelled to sign restrictive dress codes or risk losing their studentship. The group also condemned the alleged denial of Muslim students’ right to attend Friday Jumu‘ah prayers, describing it as oppressive and unconstitutional.

The organization criticized the colonial-era nursing uniform standards, arguing that they disregard Nigeria’s diverse religious and cultural context. According to MURIC, forcing Muslim students to conform to such policies not only infringes on their faith but also leads to frustration, with some dropping out or converting to Christianity under pressure.

MURIC called on the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to intervene urgently, warning that continued oppression could provoke peaceful protests or escalate into broader religious tensions. The group urged nursing institutions to respect constitutional provisions on religious freedom and adopt inclusive practices that accommodate the diverse backgrounds of their students.
