Silekunola and two others faced charges at the Iyaganku Magistrate Court in Ibadan linked to a tragic stampede that resulted in the deaths of over 40 children last week.

The court decided to remand the accused in custody, citing charges of conspiracy, negligent behavior leading to harm, and the lack of sufficient security and medical support during the event.

In a heartfelt Instagram video, Ogunseyi tearfully asked for forgiveness, emphasizing that her daughter’s actions were solely aimed at humanitarian efforts.

She highlighted Silekunola’s dedication to organizing charitable outreach over the last ten years to assist those in need, including children, pregnant women, and the elderly across Nigeria.

“She came to Ibadan to help those in need; this was not her first attempt. We have traveled the country assisting children and vulnerable populations. I feel for the families who lost their children; it was never our intention,” Ogunseyi stated.

She clarified that the stampede happened hours before the program’s planned start at 10 a.m. “By 6:30 a.m., the crowd had become unmanageable. Naomi hadn’t even arrived yet. I was called about the situation while still asleep; my number was listed on the event flyer. Naomi, her older brother, and I rushed to the police station to report the chaos, but she was detained and later charged with murder.”

Ogunseyi also mentioned that her daughter, who was reportedly ill, collapsed during police questioning and remains in custody despite her poor health.

She appealed to Nigerians and fellow mothers to understand her plight, asking for Silekunola’s release.

“Please have mercy on me. Mothers, have compassion. Help me. Don’t let my life be ruined. Please, don’t let Naomi be imprisoned—she is innocent. She came with compassion,” she pleaded.

The distressed mother further alleged that “powerful individuals” were behind her daughter’s situation, asserting that the charges were politically motivated.

“They have imprisoned my child. The courtroom was heavily guarded by police. I feel lost. They claim her arrest is an ‘order from above.’ I urge those in authority to release her. She is not a murderer; she intended to help. Naomi is fragile and unwell. President Tinubu, I implore you, please assist us,” Ogunseyi begged.

The incident has sparked public outrage, with many calling for a comprehensive investigation into the events leading to the tragedy.
