Allegations and Army’s Response

A video circulating on social media narrates Itodo’s account, alleging neglect after sustaining injuries during a combat operation. However, the Army clarified that while Itodo did suffer a gunshot injury in 2015, it was successfully treated at the same facility, allowing him to return to active service.

Maj.-Gen. Nwachukwu stated, “The narration did not give a true picture of what transpired. Lance Cpl. Itodo has been receiving continuous medical and psychological support from the Nigerian Army both locally and abroad.”

Itodo’s Medical History

• Incident in 2020: Itodo sustained a spinal cord injury in a motorcycle accident in Abia State. He was initially treated at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, and later referred to the 82 Division Medical Services and Hospital, Enugu.
• Current Condition: Medical evaluations revealed a complete spinal cord transection injury, leaving him with permanent paralysis. This diagnosis has been corroborated by both local and international medical experts.
• Ongoing Care: Itodo has been on physiotherapy to improve muscle tone, while pressure sores are continuously managed. He has also received regular psychological support.

Army’s Stance

The Army emphasized its commitment to providing care for injured personnel, stating, “The soldier has been on conservative management in the hospital and not abandoned as portrayed in the video.” Nwachukwu acknowledged the gravity of Itodo’s condition and expressed empathy, emphasizing the Army’s wish to do more if medically feasible.
