This unexpected change comes after Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), expressed his lack of confidence in Nyako’s ability to handle his case. Kanu has been in detention since 2021, facing seven charges related to treasonable felony.

According to Dailytrust, Kanu’s legal journey has been filled with ups and downs. In 2017, he was granted bail, which was later revoked, leading to a bench warrant for his arrest.

In 2022, the Court of Appeal dismissed seven of the charges against him, but the federal government’s appeal to the Supreme Court resulted in a stay of execution.

Kanu has also been denied bail on two occasions, in March and May. Justice Nyako initially stepped down from the case on September 24 after Kanu’s application, citing worries about her impartiality.
