Nnpp Leader Calls On Tinubu To Halt Tax Reform Bills For Broader Consultation

The Deputy National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Prince Nwaeze Onu, has urged President Bola Tinubu to halt the proposed tax reform bills to allow for broader consultation with stakeholders nationwide....CONTINUE READING>>>

Onu made this appeal in his New Year message to Nigerians, released to journalists in Abuja on Friday. His plea follows President Tinubu’s recent nationwide address, in which the President insisted there would be no reconsideration of the tax reform bills.

The four proposed legislations, which have already passed a second reading in the National Assembly, have faced mounting criticism, particularly from the 19 Northern governors and other regional stakeholders.

Highlighting the sensitivity of the bills, Onu stressed the importance of inclusive decision-making. He argued that unilateral actions on such critical issues could harm Nigerians, who are already grappling with economic challenges.

“The President must urgently halt the tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly, especially considering the precarious state of the economy and the struggles of citizens to meet their daily needs. These bills should be dropped to enable wider consultations with stakeholders,” Onu stated.

He also encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful, emphasizing that resilience is key to overcoming the nation’s challenges.

Onu further criticized the alleged suppression of opposition parties by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government, warning that stifling opposition undermines democratic principles.

“Every government needs a vibrant opposition to critique policies and offer constructive suggestions,” he said.

In a related appeal, Onu called on Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru to prioritize maintaining a functional educational system, building on the foundation established by past administrations. He advised the governor to focus on reducing governance costs and utilizing increased federal allocations for impactful developmental projects.

“The funds coming into Ebonyi State have risen. Instead of spending on luxurious items like exotic vehicles, they should be allocated to sustaining a robust educational system, as achieved during Dr. Sam Egwu’s tenure. Adopting modern governance approaches will ensure that policies positively impact the citizens’ lives,” Onu concluded.
