Omoyele Sowore Condemns Killing of 16 Northern Travelers in Edo State

Sowore, a human rights activist, expressed outrage over the incident, stating that the victims were reportedly on their way home for Sallah celebrations when they were stopped by vigilantes. Without any form of investigation, they were allegedly profiled as kidnappers and labeled as “Fulani herdsmen.”

Taking to his verified Twitter page on Friday, Sowore wrote, “Yesterday, some northerners returning home for Sallah celebrations were reportedly stopped by vigilantes in Edo State and, without warning and due diligence, profiled and announced to be deadly ‘Fulani herdsmen’ and kidnappers.”

He further condemned the brutal attack, revealing that the victims were severely beaten and subsequently set on fire by a mob.

“A deadly mob descended on them and burnt them, most of them alive after they’d been severely beaten,” he added.

Sowore called for justice, urging security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible, including police officers who allegedly failed to intervene.

“I condemn the mob justice visited on these innocent citizens and ask that security agents fish out and punish those involved as well as policemen and women @PoliceNG who refused to save these innocent men from the mob, they acted negligently.”

He emphasized that no civilized society should tolerate such acts of violence and lawlessness.

“There is no sane society that should tolerate this inhumane act of bestiality,” he said.

His statement has since sparked widespread reactions from social media users, with many expressing their concerns over the rising cases of mob violence in the country.
