The Perfect Fit for the Ministry of Livestock Development

Any of these leaders, with their extensive networks, practical knowledge, and passion, would have been ideal for the role. Each of their ranches exemplifies modern integrated agricultural practices, including successful methods of resettling itinerant herders with milk collection centers, schools, and more.

In 2019, I visited both L&Z and Zaidi Farms and was struck by their innovations and the ways in which they involved local herding families in organized programs, providing them access to essential services and modern resources.

From my visits and following Maiha’s presentation at the Milky Way Partnership forum, it’s clear that he has firsthand insight into the challenges and potential of the livestock industry. Zaidi Farms, for example, is an impressive operation that follows best practices in animal husbandry, working in partnership with entities like the Kaduna State Government, Milcopal, and Arla. Their inclusive approach organizes herders in nearby villages, providing them access to high-quality equipment and training, like milking parlors, cooling tanks, and more.

During his presentation, Maiha emphasized that while Nigeria hosts one of Africa’s largest herds, milk production is disproportionately low due to the challenges of nomadic herding and inadequate support infrastructure. He passionately argued for relocating herders, improving cattle breeds, and upgrading rural logistics. He advocated for giving the livestock sector greater independence from the Ministry of Agriculture, allowing a more focused effort on tapping Nigeria’s substantial yet underutilized dairy industry.

Now, as the head of the Ministry of Livestock Development, Maiha has the opportunity—and the responsibility—to lay the groundwork for a modern dairy industry. His experience, vision, and management skills will be essential to fulfilling the expectations that accompany this significant role.
