Badenoch, who was born in the UK and raised in Nigeria, often recounts her childhood as being shaped by insecurity and corruption in a troubled political environment. She previously stated, “I grew up in Nigeria and witnessed firsthand how politicians misused public funds, created a culture of self-interest, and failed to serve the people. It was a place of poverty and shattered dreams. I came to Britain for a life where hard work and honesty could lead to success.”

Vice President Shettima criticized Badenoch’s remarks, accusing her of tarnishing Nigeria’s image. He contrasted her with former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who he said has never spoken ill of his Indian heritage. Shettima also suggested Badenoch change her first name if she no longer identifies with her Nigerian roots.

Responding through her spokesperson, Badenoch stood by her statements, asserting that she speaks the truth and will not sugarcoat her views for public relations. “She is proud of her position as opposition leader in the UK and remains committed to being candid about her experiences,” her spokesperson stated.
