Governor Fubara Locked Out of Rivers Assembly Amid Ongoing Political Tension

According to reports, the security team justified their actions by claiming there was no official communication between the governor and the Assembly leadership regarding his visit. However, Fubara refuted this, stating that he had formally notified Speaker Martins Amaewhule through a letter and had also attempted to call him since Tuesday.

The Rivers State Government later shared the letter confirming that the governor had indeed informed the Assembly of his visit.

Tensions Over Supreme Court Ruling and Fresh Elections

The standoff comes amid heightened political tension in the state. Governor Fubara recently announced his decision to fully implement the February 28, 2025 judgment of the Supreme Court. As part of this, he directed the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to begin preparations for a fresh local government election, which has now been scheduled for August 9, 2025.

Additionally, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Tammy Danagogo, had sent a letter dated March 7, 2025, requesting a meeting with lawmakers on March 10, 2025. The proposed meeting was meant to discuss the re-presentation of the 2025 budget and hold a peace dialogue amid the ongoing political crisis.

Assembly’s Response

Despite these efforts, the Assembly maintained that Fubara’s invitation should follow proper channels. The Speaker and his allies have continued to challenge Fubara’s authority, reflecting the deepening power struggle between the executive and legislative arms of the state government.

With tensions still running high, it remains to be seen how this political impasse will be resolved in Rivers State.
