At a press conference in Osogbo, OSSIEC Chairman Hashim Abioye confirmed the results, calling the election peaceful and successful despite some earlier controversies surrounding its conduct.

Governor Ademola Adeleke also praised residents for their active participation in the democratic process after casting his vote in Ede, his hometown.

Earlier in the day, the Osun State High Court in Ilesa had directed OSSIEC to proceed with the elections following a lawsuit filed by the PDP. This decision came after the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, advised the Osun State Government not to proceed with the elections. He cited a February 10, 2025, judgment by the Court of Appeal (Akure Division) in Appeal No. CA/AK/272/2022, which overturned a Federal High Court decision that had removed elected local government officials from office.

Fagbemi explained that the appellate court’s ruling meant the previously sacked officials were legally reinstated and should serve their full terms until October 2025. “The implication of the Court of Appeal judgment is that the elected officials removed by the Federal High Court have been reinstated and are legally occupying their offices,” he said.

He further criticized Governor Adeleke’s decision to move forward with the elections, labeling it unconstitutional. Fagbemi also pointed to a recent Supreme Court ruling supporting local government autonomy, emphasizing that states must honor the tenure of democratically elected local officials.

On election day, OSSIEC Chairman Abioye raised concerns, alleging that police officers had sealed off the commission’s headquarters and that some OSSIEC staff members were arrested by the Nigeria Police Force while performing their election duties.
