Lagos Assembly Crisis Resolved After Lawmakers’ Meeting with Tinubu

The lawmakers arrived at the State House in two white buses, led by Deputy Speaker Meranda, while Speaker Obasa arrived separately a few minutes later. After the meeting, lawmakers were seen singing joyfully and chanting “On your mandate we shall stand” in support of Tinubu as he walked back to his office.

Although no official statement has been released regarding the outcome of the discussions, one of the lawmakers who spoke to Channels TV confirmed that “everything has been resolved.”

The Leadership Crisis in the Lagos Assembly

The turmoil began on January 13, 2025, when Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was removed from office by more than two-thirds of the 40-member House over alleged misconduct. His deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was immediately elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first female leader of the Lagos Assembly.

However, Obasa rejected his removal, arguing that the decision was made while he was out of the country. His supporters insisted that the process was flawed and called for his reinstatement.

Obasa’s Reinstatement After Weeks of Political Tussle

Despite resistance from 36 lawmakers who stood by Meranda, intense political maneuvering led to Obasa’s re-election as Speaker on March 3, 2025. Following this, Meranda stepped down as Speaker and was re-elected as Deputy Speaker.

Lawmakers commended her for her leadership, describing her as a stabilizing force who prioritized peace and unity in the House while respecting the rules of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

With Tinubu’s intervention, stakeholders believe the crisis has now been fully resolved. However, an official statement is still awaited to confirm the details of the agreement reached.
