Lagos Lawmakers Apologize to Tinubu, Reinstate Obasa After GAC Intervention

The GAC, as the highest decision-making body within the Lagos APC, intervened after reports indicated that President Tinubu was displeased with the impeachment process. Sources revealed that during the meeting, Tinubu ordered Obasa’s reinstatement, insisting that the removal be reversed.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and key GAC members attended the heated session, where concerns were raised over the lack of consultation before Obasa’s removal. In compliance with Tinubu’s directive, Lagos lawmakers were instructed to submit two apology letters.

The first letter expressed regret for the impeachment, admitting that party leaders were not consulted beforehand. The lawmakers assured the President of their commitment to converting the impeachment into a voluntary resignation. The second letter, signed by members from Lagos West, acknowledged Hon. Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker, even though it went against the party’s zoning arrangement. Seventeen out of 20 lawmakers from Lagos West endorsed the letter.

Obasa was impeached on January 13, 2025, over allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and financial mismanagement. However, some senior GAC members, including Senator Anthony Adefuye and Chief Muraina Taiwo, condemned the removal, calling it illegal and a disregard for party leadership. Despite their stance, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro advised against making statements that could further escalate tensions within the party.
