Mbata to Wike: I Appointed You as Obio/Akpor LG Chairman in 1998 Despite Challenges, Let Fubara Be

Former Senator John Azuta Mbata has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to focus on his responsibilities in Abuja and avoid meddling in the affairs of Rivers State. “This is the time and opportunity for Sir Siminalayi Fubara to demonstrate his capacity to move Rivers State forward,” Mbata stated. Reflecting on his role in Wike’s political rise, he recalled backing Wike’s candidacy as Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Council in 1998 despite significant opposition. 

In a related development, academics from five higher institutions in Rivers State have appealed for peace amid ongoing political tensions. Scholars representing Rivers State University, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, and the College of Health Sciences and Management Technology have decried the instability in the state. 

Prof. Akuro Gobo, a lecturer at Rivers State University and Coordinator General of the group Simplified Academics, commended Governor Fubara’s strides in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and human capital development. He questioned why Rivers State remains politically divided when other states rally for progress after elections. 

Williams Nzidee, an Economist and Associate Professor at Ignatius Ajuru University, condemned attempts to influence the state budget through court rulings, describing such actions as detrimental to governance and development. 

Meanwhile, the U.S.-based Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to mediate the dispute between Wike and Fubara. According to the group, the crisis has hampered development in Rivers State, with local council funds withheld following a recent court decision. 

In a communiqué marking the 30th anniversary of the Ogoni Four, MOSOP urged President Tinubu to counsel Wike to focus on his duties as FCT Minister and let Governor Fubara carry out his mandate. Stakeholders agree that resolving the political standoff is essential for the state’s progress.
