Obasa Defends Plenary with Four Lawmakers, Questions Meranda’s Speakership and Dismisses Governorship Rumors

Ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has defended his decision to preside over a plenary session attended by only four lawmakers, insisting he cannot force participation. Maintaining his claim as the duly elected Speaker of the 40-member Lagos State House of Assembly, he declared, “I’m the Speaker. I remain the Speaker of the Lagos Assembly. When I became the Speaker, all my colleagues supported me.”

Obasa also questioned the legitimacy of Mojisola Meranda’s emergence as Speaker, asking, “How was Mojisola Meranda elected as Speaker? By breaking into the chambers?” He emphasized that any attempt to remove him must adhere to constitutional requirements, stating, “I want to believe that we are law-abiding. I’m not against removal, as they call it impeachment, but if you’re going to remove somebody, you must comply with the constitution.”

Addressing rumors of internal divisions within the APC in Lagos, Obasa insisted, “The APC is one family in Lagos under the same roof. Our party is not divided under the chairmanship of Cornelius Ojelabi and under our leaders in the GAC.”

Finally, dismissing claims that the ongoing Assembly crisis is linked to 2027 governorship ambitions, he praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, adding, “This issue has nothing to do with governorship ambition. Sanwo-Olu is doing well; no reasonable person should be thinking of governorship now. Sanwo-Olu has two more years.”
