Obasanjo: We Have Mismanaged the Resources Given to Us by God

Obasanjo stated, “Nigeria has all it needs to thrive.” He pointed out the country’s significant resources, such as the Rivers Niger and Benue, crude oil, fertile land, and numerous mineral deposits, comparing Nigeria’s resources to Egypt’s River Nile.

He expressed concern that Nigeria’s difficulties are not due to a scarcity of resources but rather to ineffective management of those resources. He urged leaders, religious communities, and the public to pray for the nation’s healing and seek wisdom in effectively utilizing its wealth.

“Nigeria was not meant to struggle,” Obasanjo remarked, noting that the country has squandered the gifts bestowed upon it by God. He emphasized that if the nation humbles itself and seeks divine guidance, healing will come.

Obasanjo outlined Nigeria’s resources, which include:

• The Rivers Niger and Benue, which provide essential water supplies.
• Crude oil reserves estimated at 23 billion barrels.
• A variety of mineral resources, such as talc, gypsum, iron ore, lead, zinc, and gold.
