OBJ Reveals He Was Unaware of the Personal Letter Written for His Release Until Recently

Obasanjo, who faced imprisonment during Abacha’s rule on allegations of conspiring to overthrow the government, recognized Gowon’s contributions and expressed his gratitude for the support he received during that difficult time.

Obasanjo made these remarks at the inaugural Plateau Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival, which took place at the 10 Commandments Prayer Altar in Du, Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, over the weekend. During the event, Gowon recounted his intervention, stating that he personally appealed to Abacha to spare Obasanjo’s life.

He also noted that while he had traveled globally to thank those who advocated for his release from prison, he was unaware that Obasanjo had written a personal letter on his behalf.

In response to Gowon’s statements, Obasanjo conveyed his heartfelt appreciation for the intervention and underscored the significance of such actions during periods of political strife.

He admitted that he had not been aware of the full extent of Gowon’s efforts, particularly regarding the personal letter, until it was recently brought to his attention. “I traveled around the world expressing gratitude to those who advocated and prayed for my release from prison.

However, I was not aware that you had written a personal letter for my release until you mentioned it yesterday; I thank you for that,” Obasanjo remarked, acknowledging Gowon’s pivotal role in his eventual liberation.

In his address, Obasanjo took the opportunity to praise Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State for his dedicated efforts in fostering peace and development within the region.

He urged Mutfwang to persist in his endeavors for the benefit of the Plateau State populace, highlighting the critical nature of leadership that prioritizes the well-being of its citizens. Obasanjo’s comments emphasized the necessity of unity and collaboration in overcoming obstacles and achieving sustainable advancement.
