Olusegun Obasanjo: “We Need the Right Person for the Job, Regardless of Their Background”

In a recent meeting with a delegation from the League of Northern Democrats, former President Olusegun Obasanjo expressed deep concerns about Nigeria’s ongoing disunity, identifying it as a major obstacle to the nation’s growth and global reputation. Obasanjo lamented that Nigeria’s persistent divisions have prevented the country from reaching its full potential and serving as a beacon for the black race. He emphasized the need for unity to foster national development, stating that it is still possible to rectify past mistakes.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s history, he noted that the nation emerged from independence with three leaders, resulting in a fragmented identity.

The former president also condemned the practice of prioritizing regional and ethnic affiliations in leadership appointments. He argued that merit, capability, and effectiveness should take precedence over geographical or ethnic considerations.

“I am undoubtedly proud to be a Yoruba, but my being a Nigerian should not be an enemy of my being a Yoruba,” he asserted. “We must get the best man for the job, it does not matter where he comes from.”
