Oshiomhole Reveals He Stopped His Son from Contesting Elections Twice

Cyril, a 49-year-old medical doctor, was recently appointed as Edo State Commissioner for Health by Governor Monday Okpebholo in November. During an interview on Politics Today with Channels TV, Oshiomhole dismissed claims that he influenced his son’s appointment, stating, “He didn’t work under me; maybe Governor Monday is grooming him.”

Oshiomhole recounted how he discouraged his son from pursuing politics during his tenure as governor, opting to support other candidates instead. He explained, “When I was in Edo, I stopped him when he wanted to go for House of Reps. I said no. The second time he wanted to try again, I said no.”

Although he expressed concerns about public perceptions regarding Cyril’s appointment, Oshiomhole noted that his son’s qualifications made him deserving of the role. “Dr. Cyril is a medical doctor from Ahmadu Bello University and has done postgraduate studies in the U.S., including at Harvard,” he said.

The senator emphasized his focus on ensuring his children had access to quality education and acknowledged that as adults, they ultimately make their own decisions. “I won’t say he has it (the appointment) because he is Oshiomhole; I would say he has it despite being Oshiomhole,” he concluded.
