Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State accused Gboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, and security agency heads of conspiring to enforce the ruling, warning that they should be held accountable for any violence that followed.

Deadly Clashes Across Osun State

The violence erupted across multiple local government areas on Monday as APC and PDP supporters clashed at council secretariats. In Ikire, Aderemi Abbas was killed during a confrontation between party members wielding guns and machetes. Video footage showed Abbas lying in a pool of blood with a severe head wound.

Similar incidents occurred in Iragbiji, the headquarters of Boripe Local Government, where two people were shot dead during clashes. In Olaoluwa and Isokan LGAs, violent altercations led to multiple injuries and one fatal shooting. In Olorunda LGA, attempts by APC members to take over the council secretariat were met with resistance, leading to a heavy police presence.

The violence escalated when hoodlums armed with weapons and charms were seen intimidating bystanders and destroying phones of those recording the chaos. In Osogbo, gunshots rang out at the gate of the Osogbo Central Local Government Area, causing panic and leaving the nearby road deserted.

In Ilesa West, the convoy of Remi Omowaiye, Executive Director of the Federal Housing Authority, was attacked. Omowaiye alleged that PDP thugs fired at his vehicles, injuring his driver and security aides, and riddling his convoy with bullets.

Police Intervention

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun condemned the violence and deployed additional tactical squads to Osun State to restore order. He vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice, emphasizing that violence undermines democracy and public safety.

Party Reactions and Accusations

The APC and PDP have exchanged accusations over the cause of the violence. APC leaders, including Osun APC Chairman Tajudeen Lawal and former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola’s aides, condemned the attacks, accusing the PDP of orchestrating the violence. They claimed that APC members were killed in multiple locations, including Irewole, Isokan, and Olaoluwa LGAs.

In contrast, the PDP accused the APC of brutal attacks, alleging that APC thugs targeted PDP strongholds. The party claimed that five of its members were killed and over 50 injured. PDP’s Director of Media, Oladele Bamiji, alleged that security agents were complicit in the attacks.

The Osun State National Assembly caucus accused Gboyega Oyetola of collaborating with security agents to forcefully take over local government offices, despite a court ruling affirming their dismissal. They urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene to restore peace in the state.

Davido’s Reaction

Afrobeat star Davido, nephew of Governor Adeleke, blamed Osun State Commissioner of Police Mohammed Abba for the violence, accusing him of failing to uphold the rule of law. In strongly-worded posts on social media, Davido criticized the police commissioner for alleged bias and warned him against partial actions.
