In a statement issued on Friday by her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi, the First Lady played down the incident. She emphasized that educational institutions should encourage free expression among students while maintaining decorum.

According to Kukoyi, the First Lady’s visit was focused on inspiring and supporting healthcare professionals. The statement explained that the event, held at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba, Delta State, was part of the Renewed Hope Initiative, which aimed to distribute 10,000 professional kits to midwives in the South-South region.

While the statement acknowledged that a section of the viral video showed students playfully altering the welcome song, it also noted reports that some students of the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences had been issued a query for their participation. The First Lady’s office urged the institution to handle the situation with fairness and understanding, recognizing that young people often express themselves in lighthearted ways.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the purpose of the visit, which was to inspire and uplift midwives and healthcare workers, and expressed hope that the event would be remembered as a positive experience for all involved.
