Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, explained that the closed-door nature of the screening was for security reasons. He emphasized that this process ensures legislative oversight and accountability in military appointments, which is vital for maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s leadership structures.

If confirmed, Lieutenant General Oluyede will officially assume the role of Chief of Army Staff, solidifying his leadership in Nigeria’s military. Senator Yar’adua also acknowledged the ongoing security challenges facing the country, highlighting the importance of Oluyede’s professional skills and experience in addressing these issues. He commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their efforts in combating terrorism, insurgency, and other forms of criminality, and stressed the need for solutions regarding military funding and personnel welfare.

On Tuesday, the Senate had read President Bola Tinubu’s request to confirm Oluyede’s appointment. Prior to his current position, Oluyede served as the 56th Commander of the Infantry Corps based in Jaji, Kaduna. His appointment as acting COAS came after the death of Taoreed Lagbaja earlier this month.
