Speaking during a media parley in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike made it clear that impeachment is a constitutional process and should not be viewed as an extraordinary or destabilizing event.

“I have heard people say: ‘Oh, if they impeach him, there will be a breakdown of law and order’. Rubbish! Nothing will happen,” Wike said.

Wike Accuses Fubara of Withholding Lawmakers’ Salaries

The former Rivers governor also accused Fubara of deliberately withholding the salaries of state lawmakers for months, arguing that this was one of the reasons for their grievances. He dismissed a letter sent by Fubara to the Assembly, suggesting that the governor should have handled the situation differently.

Supreme Court Ruling and Political Crisis

Wike’s comments come in the wake of the Supreme Court’s February 28, 2025, verdict, which issued several key rulings on the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State:

• The five-man panel, led by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye, upheld the legitimacy of the Amaewhule-led House of Assembly, dismissing Fubara’s cross-appeal.
• The court ordered the Assembly to resume sitting immediately.
• The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant General of the Federation were barred from releasing funds to the Rivers State Government until it complies with previous court orders.
• The local government elections held on October 5, 2024, were declared invalid, prompting Fubara to order a fresh election set for August 9, 2025.
