Nigerian football legend Nwankwo Kanu believes that any coach managing the Super Eagles is incredibly fortunate.Kanu, who has had an illustrious career representing Nigeria on the global stage, speaks from experience. He won multiple medals for his country and earned personal accolades throughout his career.One of his most memorable moments came at the 1996 Olympic Games, where he played a vital role in helping Nigeria’s Dream Team secure the gold medal in Atlanta.
Kanu was instrumental in the dramatic 4-3 semi-final victory over Brazil, scoring twice, including the golden goal that sealed Nigeria’s spot in the final.Reflecting on Nigeria’s coaching situation in an interview with Brila.net, Kanu, a two-time African Footballer of the Year, shared his views. “Whoever coaches Nigeria is blessed. We are blessed with players; with superstars,” Kanu said.
He added, “The main thing is to put them together. It doesn’t matter who is in charge, foreign or local coach, they are blessed to manage any Nigerian team.”Kanu went on to highlight the depth of talent in the squad, saying, “When you have a team with 40 good players, what more could a coach ask for? You have 11 players on the pitch, another 11 on the bench who want to play, you are blessed with that.”He concluded, “So, when people talk I think, these people don’t understand Nigeria and Nigerian players and who we are.”
