The Super Eagles of Nigeria who secured a ticket to the finals of AFCON 2023, had the entire country in a celebrative atmosphere one many had not been aware had turned sorrowful for four families whose loved ones had slumped and died in the throes of the emotions the result of the fixture had given as the game progressed.
The news of the death of four people in different parts of the country broke the next day after the team had secured their ticket to the final of the competition. This prompted a direct response from the official handle of the team where it was revealed that the death of the four fans had come as a shock and they hoped the deceased be remembered for their passion for the beautiful game of football.
The team also observed a minute of silence for the deceased during their lunch or dinner session on Thursday, February 8, 2024. The statement read, “During the course of our semi-final match, we tragically lost few supporters. In a cruel twist of fate, their fervent passion for the beautiful game unwittingly led them to their final moments. As the Nigeria vs South Africa match unfolded, they were lost in the thrill of the game, unaware of the looming danger. May their souls find eternal peace, forever remembered for their love of football and the togetherness it brings. Rest in peace.”
