In January 2023, Mendy was acquitted of six rape charges and one sexual assault. He was also cleared of one rape charge and attempted rape during a retrial later that year. Mendy’s financial situation became difficult due to legal costs and family expenses, forcing him to sell his home in Cheshire.
However, several of his teammates, including Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez, and Bernardo Silva, provided him with financial assistance during this time.The defender, now playing for Lorient in France, claimed in a statement that several Manchester City players, including the team captain, were present at parties where similar behavior occurred, such as drinking alcohol, breaking COVID restrictions, and having casual encounters with women.
Mendy acknowledged his own mistakes but felt it was unfair that he was singled out by the club, especially as others reportedly engaged in similar activities. He pointed out that he was the only one publicly accused and humiliated.Mendy stated he was just as willing and able to perform as his teammates but was unfairly treated, as the club did not suspend or deduct wages from other players who attended the same events. He felt unjustly targeted by the club.
On a more personal level, Mendy expressed his gratitude towards Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, and Riyad Mahrez, who helped him with money to cover his legal fees and support his family during this challenging period.Mendy, who joined Manchester City for £52 million in 2017 and won three Premier League titles with the club, had his playing career affected by frequent injuries. His legal battles, however, took a significant toll on his personal and professional life.
Representing Manchester City, Sean Jones KC argued that Mendy’s failure to be paid was a result of his own irresponsible actions. He claimed Mendy was trying to turn his behavior into a moral argument, insisting that he should still be entitled to his pay despite his conduct, including being accused and imprisoned for serious charges.
