City handed debuts to Omar Marmoush and Abdukodir Khusanov, with the latter enduring a nightmare start. Just three minutes in, Khusanov misjudged a looping ball, inadvertently heading it into Nicolas Jackson’s path. Jackson set up Noni Madueke for a simple finish to give Chelsea an early lead. Moments later, Chelsea nearly doubled their advantage through Cole Palmer’s clever counter-attack, but Jackson’s positioning let City off the hook.

Phil Foden nearly equalized with a powerful strike against the post, while Joško Gvardiol missed a golden chance to level from close range. However, City’s pressure paid off just before halftime when Gvardiol atoned for his earlier miss, converting Matheus Nunes’ precise pass to make it 1-1.

Chelsea struggled to maintain their early momentum as City dominated after the break. Erling Haaland came close to scoring after capitalizing on a Levi Colwill mistake, but it was a warning Chelsea failed to heed. A long ball from Ederson found Haaland, who expertly chipped Robert Sánchez to give City the lead.

The hosts sealed the win in style as Haaland held off his marker to set up Foden. The in-form forward raced through and slotted home his sixth league goal in four games, capping an excellent performance. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, returning to the Etihad, saw his team falter, leaving them sixth in the standings, a point behind City.
