The game began with both sides keen to assert control, but Manchester United created the first real opportunity. Villa soon responded, with Jaden Philogene showing his flair to create a chance that narrowly missed the right post, underlining the attacking intentions from both teams.

As the first half wore on, the physical nature of the game became evident. Referee Robert Jones handed out several yellow cards, with Christian Eriksen booked first for a rash challenge, followed by cautions for Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo later in the half.
