Igbo Professor of Arabic Makes History as National Mosque Imam, Delivers First Sermon Today

The management of the National Mosque in Abuja has approved the appointment of Professor Ilyas Usman as one of its Imams. Muslim News reports that Prof. Usman is also the first Professor of Arabic from the Igbo region. In his new role, he will assist the current Imams, Professors Ibrahim Makari and Muhammad Kabir, in leading Friday and daily prayers in rotation.According to Muslim News, the Friday sermon at the National Mosque is traditionally preceded by a brief lecture given in the three major languages of Nigeria—Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo—on the same topic as the sermon.
