“Kanayo O. Kanayo Questions If the South East Is Still Part of Nigeria Amid Complaints About Excessive Police and Military Checkpoints”

Veteran actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has expressed his frustration on social media regarding the excessive number of police and military checkpoints along roads in the South East. In contrast, he observed that in the South East, one cannot travel more than 200 meters without encountering a checkpoint that is “harassing and humiliating” travelers.He questioned whether the abundance of checkpoints reflects a “hatred or dislike” towards the people of the South East.

“I left the Felele Olorunshogo area of Ibadan this morning at around 7:15 and arrived in Lagos by 8:15. Over an 80-kilometer stretch, I didn’t see a single checkpoint, whether police or military. Have you ever traveled the Onitsha-Enugu expressway? Did you count how many police and military checkpoints are there?”Kanayo further inquired why the South East region appears to be so heavily militarized, pointing out that it is nearly impossible to travel even a short distance without running into a checkpoint. He emphasized that the delays and humiliations experienced by travelers should be addressed.

“The number of police checkpoints and collection points is excessive. Our people face such humiliation that passengers are often ordered to get out of their vehicles and raise their hands. Is this a manifestation of hatred? Is this dislike? This situation is unacceptable. Is the South East still considered part of Nigeria?”
