As the deadline draws near, more lecturers are supporting the ASUP National Executive Council’s call for a potential work stoppage. Dr. Iloma Richard, ASUP Zone D Coordinator, expressed his frustration in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Port Harcourt, stating that the government has failed to resolve the contentious matters outlined in the new guidelines.

Richard pointed out that ASUP had previously halted a planned strike on July 22 after receiving government assurances that the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) would review the disputed guidelines. However, he lamented that no significant progress has been made since then, blaming the government’s apparent disregard for the union’s welfare demands.

The ASUP leader cautioned that neglecting quality control in polytechnic education could result in the decline of technical and vocational education in Nigeria. He mentioned that lecturers in Zone D, which encompasses South-South and South-East states, are ready to withdraw their services immediately if instructed by the national leadership.continue Reading>>>

Key concerns include delays in engaging stakeholders about the new scheme, inconsistencies within the Federal Polytechnic Act, and unmet salary reviews for state-owned institutions. ASUP is also demanding the release of crucial funding and the creation of a special academic allowance for its members.

If the Federal Government fails to address these issues by the end of the ultimatum, ASUP intends to promptly mobilize its members for industrial action.
