Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State expressed disappointment, stating that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has not yet brought the development he achieved as Lagos State governor from 1999 to 2007 to the national level. Despite his respect for Tinubu, Mohammed admitted that he initially expected the President would replicate the success he had in Lagos. He highlighted that Tinubu’s achievements there were partly due to his strong team, which included former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and former Minister Kayode Fayemi.

Mohammed questioned why these experienced figures aren’t part of Tinubu’s administration and urged the President to involve capable, knowledgeable individuals instead of surrounding himself with people who only offer blind praise.”The National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by the Vice President, is meant to be advisory, but as governors, our views often feel disregarded,” Mohammed said.

He clarified that his criticism isn’t meant as an insult, adding that he holds Tinubu in high regard for his mentorship across Nigeria. “I had high hopes he’d bring his ‘Lagos magic’ to the presidency, but it seems he’s either overwhelmed or resistant to guidance.”Speaking as an opposition figure, Mohammed said he has voiced his concerns, noting that Tinubu’s policies, especially around the economy, aren’t easing hardships.

He emphasized that his comments aren’t inflammatory but rather a moderate critique focused on addressing issues in areas like the oil sector, insecurity, economic policies, and labor relations.Mohammed criticized the government’s handling of economic matters, particularly regarding fuel and public welfare, suggesting that current policies aren’t effective. He said Nigerians are struggling with rising living costs, and urged the President to adopt strategies that genuinely alleviate hardship. He questioned the impact of fuel subsidy removal, noting that its supposed benefits haven’t materialized, as fuel prices continue to rise, burdening citizens. “How can workers afford to travel, or people buy essentials like maize?” Mohammed asked, stressing that addressing basic needs is crucial.

Mohammed urged Tinubu to bring back knowledgeable leaders like Osinbajo and Fayemi, arguing that skilled advisors are essential for effective governance. “The President needs to surround himself with those who provide meaningful input—not just those offering blind praise,” he concluded.
