Fresh crisis in PDP over G5 governors, others

Nyesom Wike, the recently-resigned governor of Rivers State, and other leaders of the Integrity Group are the targets of a new plan by the PDP leadership, The Punch learned this week. Reliable party sources report that some opposition party leaders are making a renewed effort to have Wike, other G5 governors, and other PDP chieftains who are a part of the Integrity Group expelled from the party.

According to The Punch learned that the party’s Atiku Abubakar presidential candidate’s followers are adamant about getting rid of Wike and his friends because they believe that they worked against the party’s interests during the nation’s previous presidential election. As part of the ongoing effort to deal with Wike and his supporters within the struggling party, it is also rumored that Senator Iyorchia Ayu, the party’s suspended National Chairman, is working with his allies.

There were hints before the most recent general elections that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party intended to oust the former governor of Rivers State and his colleagues for anti-party conduct. However, Wike quickly obtained a court order to prevent the party from exiling him in a cunning political maneuver. Before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court of Abuja, he filed an ex-parte motion asking for a court order.

Justice Omotosho granted all the requested reliefs after hearing Wike’s argument, noting that “All parties in this suit shall maintain peace and shall not take any action or step or act that may render the outcome of the motion on notice dated and filed on February 2, 2023, null and void.” that any act, measure, or action taken to render the decision of the motion on notice filed on February 2, 2023, invalid shall be void. Wike and his fellow Integrity Group members, therefore, avoided the alleged effort to have them expelled from the PDP. Threats of expulsion, however, persisted within the troubled opposition party, particularly after Atiku was defeated in the polls by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, a candidate for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), despite never-ending allegations that they colluded against the party’s candidates in the 2023 presidential election.
