Oby Ezekwesili Demands Evidence That Alaba Market Demolition Is Not Politically Motivated

On Saturday, June 17, the market’s deteriorated buildings began to be demolished.

As early as 2016, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) marked at least 17 buildings for demolition.

The leaders of the well-known Alaba International Market in the state’s Ojo Local Government Area reportedly accused Governor Sanwo-Olu’s government of demolishing their market buildings in a previous article by SaharaReporters.

They claimed that the government intended to take their market away from them and give it to a group of Chinese investors who wanted to allegedly create a multipurpose market.

The leaders, who claimed in response to the market’s ongoing demolition, claimed that even though both the local and state governments are aware of all of the market’s leaders, none one informed them of the demolition.

To the contrary, Oby Ezekwesili encouraged the governor to publish a list of every building that was demolished along with the deadline by which all applicable due process procedures had been exhausted before the demolitions in a statement that she shared on her verified Twitter account on Tuesday.

She also counselled President Bola Tinubu to avoid inciting a highly toxic environment against fellow citizens.

“The Governor Sanwo-Olu-led administration on Friday started the process of removing what it described as distressed buildings in the Alaba International Market in the Ojo Local Government Area. “I have a Policy advice for @jidesanwoolu that would be helpful for all sides and the public. “Mr Governor, please immediately publish details of each destroyed building and the dateline of Due Process rules that were exhausted by your Government before it was “removed.” “It will be wise for the Governor to take this counsel on Transparency and Full Disclosure since it would provide evidence to the public that this is not a vengeful political attack against the predominant Igbo community in Alaba Market.” “Let me also use this opportunity to again advise the @followlasg and its cheerleaders including @officialABAT to be careful in persisting to brew a toxic atmosphere against fellow citizens before, during and after the 2023 elections.” “Governance by maliciousness does no one any good.
