G5 Governors Who Lost Their Senatorial Election In Just Concluded National Assembly Elections

It is no longer news that the 2023 national assembly elections took place nationwide on Saturday with many Nigerians voting for their preferred candidates.

In wake of the outcome of the election results, I’ve decided to highlight the three governors who lost their senatorial bids.

1. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi: the Enugu state governor is a member of the G5 group in the Peoples Democratic Party. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi who was looking forward to being elected to the senate, lost his senatorial election to Labour Party candidate, Okey Ezea who was declared winner of the election for Enugu North senatorial district.

According to Premium Times, the Labour Party candidate polled 104, 492 votes to defeat Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi who garnered 46,948 votes.

2. Samuel Ortom: Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom lost his senatorial election in the just concluded national assembly elections. Samuel Ortom who was highly against Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy, publicly declared support for Peter Obi’s candidacy some days ago but he was defeated by his former aide, Titus Zam of the All Progressives Congress in the election.

According to Premium Times, Titus Zam polled 143,151 votes to defeat Samuel Ortom who garnered 106, 882 votes.

3. Okezie Ikpeazu: just like his counterparts, Samuel Ortom and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Okezie Ikpeazu who is a member of the G5 group was defeated at the polls by senator Abaribe of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

According to Punch, Abaribe polled 49,693 votes to defeat Okezie Ikpeazu who was only able to garner 28, 422 votes during the election.

Nonetheless, it’s worthy to note that Atiku Abubakar performed woefully in the three states the governors are from. Though the peter Obi factor was quite evident in Enugu state and Abia state, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar failed to win in Benue state even when Iyorchia Ayu, is from the state.
