Mamman Daura, Buhari’s Powerful Nephew, Falls illness After News of Emefiele’s Arrest: Is There a Connection?

Mamman Daura, the influential nephew of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has reportedly fallen ill upon hearing the news of the arrest of the suspended Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, by the Department of State Services (DSS), according to SaharaReporters.

Sources indicate that Daura’s sudden illness may be connected to his alleged protection of Emefiele from prosecution over the years due to their business dealings involving forex sales, which earned Daura the reputation of being Buhari’s powerful nephew.

Meanwhile, top sources revealed that Daura has been unwell since Friday when news of Emefiele’s arrest reached his residence in Kaduna State.

Daura’s influence has diminished over time, following his departure from the Presidential Villa due to a fallout with the former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, and his subsequent health issues.

The DSS had previously attempted to arrest Emefiele, but he was shielded by soldiers provided by the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Lucky Irabor.

The DSS investigation alleges Emefiele’s involvement in terrorism financing and fraud, including diverting public funds for his failed presidential campaign in 2022 and channeling resources to support groups such as the “Unknown Gunmen,” the Eastern Security Network (ESN), and elements of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Furthermore, the investigation linked Emefiele to a known terror financier who allegedly received funds from the apex bank governor for onward transfer to controversial Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, known for his association with terrorists and advocating for amnesty for them.

The DSS also accused Emefiele of mismanaging the CBN subsidiary NISRAL, the Anchor Borrowers Programme, and engaging in fraudulent activities such as money laundering, round-tripping, and self-enrichment.
