Obi accuses INEC chair, Mahmood Yakubu, of evading subpoena in petition against Tinubu

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Wednesday, informed the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja that INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, has been evading service of a subpoena on him. Continue Full Reading>>>

Premium times report that, Mr Obi wants Mr Yakubu to testify before the five-member panel of the court concerning his petition challenging President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the 25 February election.

His assertion that Mr. Yakubu was avoiding subpoena service came just 24 hours after Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s legal team hinted they would be calling INEC’s chair to testify in court regarding the subpoena. On Thursday, Mr. Yakubu was supposed to give a testimony in their case.

According to Premium times, Livy Uzoukwu, the leader of Mr. Obi’s legal team, has been at odds with the Nigerian election commission over their inability to access electoral records to support their claims. Continue Full Reading>>>

In their combined appeal, the presidential candidate and his party, the Labour Party, pleaded with the court to throw out Mr. Tinubu’s victory because of INEC’s allegedly dishonest actions during the contested presidential election.

Premium times report that, Mr. Obi’s lawyer, Livy Uzoukwu, stated during the hearing’s resumption on Wednesday that the chairman of the electoral umpire’s office had turned down a subpoena issued to Mr. Yakubu to submit some documents for the court.

After Mr. Obi’s legal team had submitted all of the election records it had for the court to review, Mr. Uzoukwu made his disclosure.

He claimed that had Mr. Yakubu’s office complied with a subpoena filed on him to produce some records, the team would have continued to present additional documentary proof.

They accused the INEC chairman of impeding the development of their lawsuit.
