Carrying N100,000 Cash On Election Day Was For Miscellaneous Expenses, Not Vote Buying – Governor Ortom Tells EFCC

The Governor of Benue state, Samuel Ortom has ordered the release of the University lecturer and Director-General of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship campaign council, Cletus Tyokyaa after he was arrested by the Economic Financial Crime Commission (EFCC). It was reported that Tyokyaa was apprehended after his car was searched and N306,700 cash of various denominations was seen in his car. The agency claimed that he attempted to run away when he saw them coming and after he was caught he was unable to give a reasonable explanation for the money.

Following the arrest, the governor of Benue state condemned the arrest of Mr. Cletus Tyokyaa during an interview with the journalist. While speaking he claimed that the PDP state director for the campaign had N100,000 on him, not N306,700 as revealed by the EFCC.

Saying that the money was not for vote buying but it’s for his upkeep at the polling unit. He advised the EFCC to release him because what they did is not correct.

“Are you telling me that I will not have money for my upkeep when I go to a polling unit or what? N100,000. It is a shame. And this is not right. And I want to advise EFCC to immediately release the director of our campaign, Dr. Cletus Tyokyaa. It is no offense, it is wrong, and it is not correct. N100,000?
